Practical Ways 18. Sequencing skills

It is necessary to introduce kids to sequencing whether to perform the smallest task , or breaking up a complex task to sequence of activities or taking instructions and following the sequence. These skills are very much used while designing coding through writing algorithms or flowcharts. It can be introduced through various ways either through retelling stories or recalling events based on day , time , date . These could be an entire process with elements like input , outputs , decisions , next and before elements etc.

Understanding sequencing and able to perform any task by dividing them to a list of activities and planning their sequence is very necessary to develop critical and problem solving skills. Various examples or ways in which sequence can be introduced

Through simple games involving basic instruction or following and repeating patterns.Like following and repeating a pattern of colour code sequence or directions or number sequence.

Following a list of procedure to achieve a task like cooking a dish or making a model or project or origami.

Even the smallest routine or daily task like dressing up for school , preparing the dining table etc..

Sequence in process or account of activities or events or visits example-
System or working in hospital , billing in shopping , ATM , courier , railway ticketing.
Visit to a museum , zoo or exhibition .
Planning a celebration or account of trip outing or picnic or vacation
Online order , booking process for their toys and clothes.

Math’s Stories too need to be understood in a sequence whether it involves transactions , distribution or mathematical operations performed in the sequence, according to the story or those involving age or time related events or comparisons .

Building up on sequencing by asking various questions like what comes next , what was before , what if this happens , what if this is the condition what will happen next, what would have happened if a particular activity was skipped or course changed, what are other possibilities .

So through various ways kids can be introduced at their levels to understand sequencing accordingly more depth and details like decisions and branching can be added to the process to develop more higher order skills .
