Kids can be introduced to actually reading calendar in detail from grade 1 though its parts and vocabulary are made familiar much before . While reading a calendar help the identify the different parts the month , year , weeks , weekdays and a day . Then help them locate important event or dates on calendar . Help them understand the concept of repetition or cycle of 7 days in a week and then next and 12 months in a year and then next . Also the number of days in a month the concept of leap year and an easy way to remember the months with 30 and 31 days .Once this basic has been made clear help the understand the sequence before day , after / next day , today , tomorrow , yesterday .Next month , before month , or months or days between .Now helps them to understand the table form whether its column wise or row wise representation in a month eg: How the rows identify with same type of day example Monday’s of a week , number of weeks in month represented by column. Next help them identify based on their place the date needs example first Monday , 4th Thursday or next Wednesday after 13th Feb. .Thus locating a particular date in the month based on queries .
This concept of tables can also be used to help them understand time tables of school or their own home time tables about their various activities or schedules. Help them to make such tables or read such tables learning to identify what the rows represent and what the columns eg: rows represent days of week columns the time . Now the inner element in the table could be the subjects or activities corresponding to day and time . This helps them to read and develop time tables Then ask them queries about the elements like which day has the more number of drawing class or which day has least number of hw time or which day is music day etc.
These tables can be used to make charts representing ideas or charts or checklist . Example : the rows could represent day in a week and activities as column and the element could be checked to know if the activity was conduced for the day . or a food chart with days and showing items for breakfast lunch dinner or snacks .
