Big Skills – 7 . Problem Solving Skills

Kids can have many problems arising form any areas of development from academics , to behavior , to communication , to social .How we or they on their own identify and tackle these problems also needs to be worked out .Sometimes it could be through guidance , sometimes collaboration , sometimes self evaluated and solving. No matter the way used its important to first understand the problem and the need to solve it .

Most preferred best for Childs development and developing problem solving skills is guided way to help them identify and solve a problem on their own through some basic steps.

First when a child finds something that is a reason of his reaction or something is making him angry or disturbing him. First teach them to calm themselves .

Next help them define the problem clearly the reason , the source behind their reaction , help them understand clearly the reason what triggered the response , rather finding blames or faults elsewhere , what is it in the situation or scenario that leads or causes the problem. Defining the cause and effect.

Next come up with different solutions possible to work on the problem, Brainstorm all possible solutions one can think of for the problem. This step brings in the understanding of ones angles and thoughts about the problem. Use different sources to find for more solutions either through other examples.

Next is evaluation of those solutions , what would happen if a solutions is chosen , will it be right ,safe ,fair , how will it effect other areas or people. Role playing or acting out characters from stories where a character faces problems and encourage them to come up with solutions.

Once these solutions are evaluated its time to choose and implement a solution for the problem . At last check how well the solution worked after a period of time if it did , what other changes can be made to it and other areas where similar solution could be implemented.

Teaching them to problem solve helps them become good at academics, good for future career, more confident and independent , build resilience . They learn to look at challenges from a fresh perspective. If students practice problem solving consistently, they can develop greater situational and social awareness. As they grow they learn to handle more complex situations in life.

Sometimes a guided method or parents find out ways to help the children to solve their problems when it becomes difficult for them to identify and work on it themselves , especially in academics . In such situations parents can use various techniques or methods to help solve problems in a more understandable form for the child . Also they devise ways that can be incorporated to daily life or routine or approach in Childs life , that can develop needed support to work on those problems. In the process when a point is reached help the child understand how this process helped in solving the issue and why is it necessary to bring about this change to solve the problem one is facing.

There could be more than one approach to solving problems with kids, guide them through the process , help them work on their own or through understanding and collaboration . Sometimes as parent or teacher we devise ways to solve those problems by following a plan or organized method and routine which is sometimes dependent on insights and feedbacks with time to make necessary changes. Whichever way you use to solve or develop problem solving in kids whether they are involved directly or indirectly , show them through the process and necessity to identify , address and solve problems To make them believe that it is possible to solve and work on problems when right approach and strategy is used , thus building confident and independent individuals.

These problem solving skills helps them to identify problems at larger level later in life and work for solving problems for others too. Also it helps them develop algorithm , like the ones in coding to reach to a particular solution, navigating through various cases and loops that may arise in the process . Finding various reasons and decisions to be taken ,Thus working on more complex problems and understanding the complexities to address a problem. Problem solving can be developed through various collaborative activities in classroom , brainstorming , STEM/STEAM .or activities like programming .But the best problem solving skills are developed from real life examples being among people ,dealing with complexities of relationship, interactions , finding ways to solve issues. Also in process learning to accept consequences or accepting and making mistakes helps to build knowledge as a part of problem solving. This knowledge developed through failures and mistakes help in building resilience and working on better ways to solving the problem.

  1. What a great advice! Not only that it gives teachers and parents alike clarity on how to help kids tackle problems, it helps us understand how we ourselves (sometimes unconsciously and mechanically) need to approach the problem-solving loop.

    1. Thank you means a lot, yes there could be more than one approach to problem solving and sometimes we need to help them work on the problem as we design a plan based on insights.

      1. Honestly speaking, I made a record of your advice for helping develop my own problem-solving skills. I find it useful not only for kids but also for adults who might accidentally fall into the trap of reacting based on emotions rather than objective evaluation of the problem, the situation, and the solutions.

      2. I am honoured , and thankful my posts were useful , also I write more from experience with kids and problems around.
