This is the toughest part as this will decide how the child will relate to this subject Maths through the school years. Introducing numbers begins with just reading and recogninsing them in the order( sometimes just as repeat and learn poem) but doesn’t stop there, that’s when all facets to this basic numbers the child learnt starts.
- Reading recognizing number in order.
- Counting then recognizing(circling) or writing the count.
- Learning the main milestones in the number line 10, 20 ,…100
- Number names
- Numbers and their order and concept of big and small number.
- Before , after, between or fill in the series.
- Skip counting
- Even and odd numbers
- Greater and smaller , ascending and descending.
- Addition and subtraction using fingers or number line
- One digit, two digit numbers ,places in the number , place value
Well there any many ways to get to the same topics mentioned above , it depends on the grasping power or understanding capacity of the child. But it is equal responsibility of the tutor to go beyond text book methods to acquaint the child as in these early years every child has a different orientation to the same topic.
Its important to give time and use as many ways as possible to get through the topic to the child as this will form the base without which coming years can be a struggle.
There are even facets to these topics which still some children wont easily be able to capture and may need more time than others. for eg:
- Teaching them to read numbers always from left to right so that there is distinction between 12 and 21, 32 and 23, 56 and 65.
- Topics like before , after may require you to present them with the entire number line or table of the numbers , so that they recognize how every number has a before and after . A hand method can be used to differentiate between- before which is always to left hand of the number and after which is always to the right hand .
- The concept of bigger and smaller number isn’t that explainable at that age to some so either teach through a simple number line or scale that denotes sequential growth, you can try using some counting and comparing two groups of items or basic measurement to make them understand this concept.
- Last addition and subtraction the difference between the methods need to made clear to the child , how addition needs counting to move forward and subtraction needs counting to move backwards using basic finger technique or number line.
After all this the age and introduction of topics and their sequence need to be very well checked so that it doesn’t not lead to unnecessary confusion or stress on the learner and tutor.
